Uni Role Models

Uni Role Models provide high school students with an insight to university life  through the following activities:

  • The Shadow a Student Programme  -  an opportunity for you as an enrolled UWA student to inspire high school students to follow your lead and show them what a day on campus is all about by taking a  prospective student or two to lectures, tutorials, lab sessions etc.
  • Visiting high schools to provide  personal experiences about uni studies
  • Meeting high school students during their campus visit to show them the grounds and talk about what you do.

 As a Uni Role Model we suggest that you talk to prospective students about the following:

• How uni is different to school;
• A typical day in the life of a uni student;
• The number of contact hours per week and study time;
• The format of a lecture;
• Tutorials - what happens;
• Recreational/Social/Cultural Life;
• Issues which a new student may face;
• The Support Services available to help students make the transition from school to uni;

It is not only schools which have found the programme positive but student ambassadors have also found that it has helped them in a number of ways:

Meeting up with  potential students and just having the chance to talk about what I know. I never had an opportunity like this when I was at high school and I felt it would have been good if it was available so I wanted to share my experiences. (Tia Byrd)

It is a rewarding experience and gives you the opportunity to practice public speaking which is a very useful skill to have. It also allows high school students to hear from a current university student of a similar age, and someone they can relate to. (Wilson Ong)

Being a student ambassador gave me the opportunity to reflect back on how I have grown since I have been at Uni, and to share these experiences with country students who have no idea what the university experience can offer. (Nigel Clifford)
