Mentor training information

There are a variety of training opportunities open to mentors. They include:

Module 1: Mentoring at UWA [compulsory attendance required]

When you first sign up to be a mentor, you will be required to attend this 45 minute introductory workshop. During the workshop, you will meet staff of the program as well as your fellow mentors. This is a small group interactive workshops designed to cover the basic information about the program. All new mentors must attend this workshop before being linked with mentees.

Each student who attends Module 1 will receive our comprehensive training pack. This information is fundamental to the development of effective mentoring at UWA.

Module 2: Getting Started [optional attendance following module 1]

This hands on workshop is designed to give new mentors confidence in their leadership ability before they begin mentoring. During this workshop we will:

  • Explore effective communication strategies to enhance participants effectiveness as mentors
  • Consider how to effectively build rapport with mentees
  • Role play icebreakers and common situations
  • Talk over concerns in a small group environment
  • Share some tips for effective mentoring

Module 3: Focusing on diversity [optional attendance following module 1]

This hands on workshop is designed to explore attitudes, perceptions and approached for working with people from diverse backgrounds. This workshop is offered in conjunction with UWA's Equity and Diversity Office and is open to all current UniMentors.

Module 4: Mentoring Revisited [required attendance for all mentors who have been a mentor for one year or more]

This workshop is designed to give experienced mentors an opportunity to refocus on their mentoring, share ideas with other mentors and consider their skill development as a UniMentor.

All new mentors are encouraged to attend Modules 1 and 2 initially and Module 3 once they have mentored for a short while.

All existing mentors who have mentored for more than one year are required to attend Module 4 and are also encouraged to attend Module 3, if they have not already done so.

Students receive a Certificate of Participation for each module completed.

Mental Health First Aid

Mentors who are in their second or subsequent year as a Mentor are entitled to attend free of charge, a Mental Health First Aid course offered through the Health Promotions Unit. This is a very worthwhile course that all mentors who meet the requirements should consider. For further details, click here.
